We love Animals

Be in harmony with Nature

Help us take care of our rescued animals and enjoy the most genuine farm experience during your responsible holiday in Maio.

The Animal Farm

Lembranca the cow, with her little calf, Lola.

Lembranca and Lola were the first members of our farm. After their arrival Lembranca, thanks to a good and balanced diet, was able to produce the milk needed to breastfeed the little one, and now both are at a healthy weight.

Roxenne, Telma, Camilla and Bianchina, the donkeys.

We added four female donkeys to our family. All four were walking alone along the main street of Vila where they were captured by government officials. The donkeys spent some months locked up until we purchased them at an auction and moved them to Vila Maris, their new home, where they are loved.

Next, Romeo, the only male, was rescued the same way and he joined the group some months later.

Sisal, the horse

Sisal is the only horse in Maio.

Coming from Sal island, he is the son of a Cape Verdean racehorse and lost weight after he started refusing to eat. He was so weak that he could not ride anymore. Elena met him and took this to heart so she decided to bring him to Maio.

Some days after arriving in Vila Maris Sisal had very bad colic. As fate would have it a team of vet volunteers was on the island for a cat and dog sterilization campaign. They came to Vila Maris immediately to visit Sisal but there was nothing they could do. Sisal had an intestinal blockage and needed to be walked a lot, waiting for a very unlikely natural unblocking.

After the team of Villa Maris walked him, Sisal’s health began to improve. However, he still could not roll on the floor and therefore had to be supervised throughout the night.

Now Sisal is doing much better and is king of the farm! He has a big appetite, walks everyday along the beautiful white sand beaches near Villa Maris, and lives wild and free together with his new four-legged friends surrounded by love.
